BANDON RETAINING WALL
REHABILITATION WORKS

Bandon, Co. Cork.
This project included the replacement of a river retaining wall
supporting the National Primary Route near Bandon Town Centre
together with the reinstatement of paths, roadway and services.
This work was part of a flood relief scheme for Bandon Town.
L&M Keating acted as Project Supervisor Construction Stage for
this project.

The River Bridewell is a tributary of the Bandon River, an area of
high ecological importance as it supports spawning salmonids.
Part of the original masonry river retaining wall was washed
away in severe flooding while remaining sections were
underscoured and in general need of rehabilitation.

L&M Keating redesigned the proposed retaining wall structure
and pre-cast much of the works to reduce the required works
area and programme thereby maximising public safety and
reducing impact on traffic in the town.

The contractor design also had lesser impact on the river bed,
involving less risk of contamination or silt mobilisation of the
watercourse. L&M Keating proposed and used an “Aquadam”
flexible coffer dam system which enabled the strict ecological
segregation required to be achieved.

Structural damage to the wall was identified by site investigation
and replaced with ashlar limestone masonry to precast wall
elements. The remaining wall was cleaned of vegetation, pointed
with lime mortar and grouted with natural lime. Scoured areas
were reinstated with underwater insitu concrete.

Approximately 500m of carriageway reinstatement and associate
pipe work & drainage was also completed.
