| DANIEL O’CONNELL MEMORIAL CHURCH, (Protected Structure) Caherciveen, Co. Kerry |
Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church is an example of Irish Gothic revival architecture designed by George Ashlin. It was constructed of mass concrete with a fine granite facade between 1886 and 1892. Phase 1 of this project involved the erection of a specially designed tube and fitting scaffolding which surrounded the entire building. Once the 10 lifts of scaffolding were erected the restoration work could begin. The external of the church was to be rejuvenated which commenced with the repair and replacement of damaged stonework. The parapets were all removed, drilled and pinned and replaced back to their original position. The cleaning and pointing could then commence. The cleaning and pointing works have given the church a new lease of life and praise has been widespread for the works carried out. The roofs were stripped back and re-slated using the salvaged slates and additional reclaimed slates. Replacing all the old lead roof gutters and valleys and refurbishing the stained and leaded glass windows. Phase 2 will involve the refurbishment of the interior church. |
