RIVER SHANNON
CROSSING ENABLING
WORKS,
University of Limerick.

This temporary structure was designed, supplied, assembled and
installed to provide access to allow construction of the Northern
Campus of Limerick University to proceed while a permanent
bridge was constructed.

This 76m clear span bridge was assembled from a proprietary
temporary bridge system, and designed to carry up to 3 loaded
trucks simultaneously. The abutments were constructed in steel
piling, and later removed on removal of the bridge. The bridge
was push launched from one shore.

Access to the northern shore was limited to very small plant, and
materials of the abutment were floated across the river.

The site was entirely within an Special Area of Conservation, and
a feature of the bridge was a novel contractor-designed run-off
collection system which was hung below the bridge deck.

This contract involved preparatory work to enable the
construction of a new bridge across the River Shannon and a
new Student Village at the University of Limerick Campus,
Plassey, Limerick.

The centrepiece of this contract was a 76m single span Bailey
Bridge, which was assembled and launched from one side of the
river only. It was designed to carry three fully laden road trucks
simultaneously and was used to place some 100,000t of site
hardcore within the scope of this contract and later two years of
construction traffic.

The location of the Bailey Bridge was within a Special Area of
Conservation and detailed and elaborate measures were put in
place to safeguard the environment. No work was allowed within
the river and the riverbank had to be reinstated using preserved
original sod and clay upon completion of the works.

L&M Keating Ltd designed elements of the works included, the
bridge, the abutments and an innovative drainage system to
prevent run off from the bridge entering the River Shannon.
