| ROONAGH PIER DREDGING, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo. |
Roonagh Pier near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo is the mainland pier serving Clare and Inisturk Islands which are situated several miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean. In the summer of 2003 L&M Keating Ltd completed a €2.2 million contract to upgrade this facility, which is in an extremely exposed location and carries heavy summer traffic. The company proposed and carried out a contractor designed 30m extension, consisting of permanent sheet pile cells, filled with mass concrete, rock anchored to the seabed. This was completed with precast and in-situ concrete facing panels, deck and wave walls. Dredging, including rock removal was carried out to deepen the existing harbour to give 3m depth at low tide, facilities including craneage on the old pier were upgraded. The harbour remained open for commercial and tourist traffic at all times and appropriate ecological steps were taken to safeguard a nearby seal colony. |
