| SHANNON FERRIES JETTY, Killimer, Co. Clare. |
Killimer Car Ferry operates a ferry service across the Shannon Estuary between Killimer in Co. Clare and Tarbert in Co. Kerry. The service has been in existence since the 1960’s, and at peak summer road traffic levels involves some fifty ferry movements carrying up to 2,500 vehicles per day. L&M Keating Ltd. constructed a new pier for this operation as a replacement for an old timber structure, which was removed as part of the contract. The new pier consists of a 50m long cellular reinforced concrete pier to approximately the low water mark with a 90m long sheet piled head with stone infill. The pier allows the operation and mooring of a car ferry on either side and includes a proprietary fendering system and all necessary facilities located on the pier deck. The continuous operation of the ferry service imposed significant constraint on the construction methods employed and works were completed in a seven month period. In conjunction with the car ferry company, L & M Keating Ltd. developed a novel mooring system, which floats with the tidal water level and enables the safe mooring of the ferry to the pier at all tidal states without shore assistance. |
